The Samba-Mayela Case: The Number Nobody Printed and the Season Nobody Can Rewind

The Athletics Integrity Unit's statement landed on a Friday morning. The first thing I did was count. The second was to wonder why nobody else had.

I counted how many words the story spent on the suspension and how many it spent on what the event actually is. Two to three hundred on the ban. Zero on the difference between a whereabouts failure and a substance violation, and zero on why three failures inside twelve months is the number that matters. Not one sentence was allocated to any of it.

Last summer I watched the Paris final with a notebook open. Masai Russell took gold in 12.33 seconds, Cyrena Samba-Mayela silver in 12.34, Jasmine Camacho-Quinn bronze in 12.36. One hundredth of a second between gold and silver. Two hundredths between silver and bronze. I wrote that night: in this event the podium is decided by breathing rhythm, not lung capacity. What happens to that rhythm when an administrative case breaks a training block is something nobody ever taught me.

Twenty-four hours later the question stopped being theoretical.

The AIU's announcement amounts to this: France's 25-year-old hurdler has been provisionally suspended over an alleged whereabouts breach; the sanction was imposed on September 18; a final decision could carry a ban of up to two years. It sits inside the anti-doping framework but is not a laboratory report. Under World Athletics rules, three whereabouts failures within twelve months constitute a standalone anti-doping rule violation, with no positive test required. So the sentence "there is no positive result" may offer moral comfort. It does not offer legal protection.

The athlete's representative has put three things on the record: the matter is exclusively administrative; it has nothing to do with the use of any prohibited substance; and the athlete continues to respond within the allotted timeframes and to co-operate fully. I keep those sentences as testimony, not as declaration. Anyone who has spent years keeping verbatim transcripts of such statements knows that the language of cooperation is rarely the language of innocence. It is the language of sentence reduction.

I have one objection to a date, and it belongs in print now. The report says she withdrew from "August's European Championships" because of injury. The European outdoor championships normally sit in the June-July window. Verify the date first, then print any claim about which meets she missed. Guessing at a dateline is not a habit of mine.

Samba-Mayela is 25. The peak window in the sprint hurdles generally runs from 24 to 29. She is standing at the last step of the ascent, just short of the summit. An injury and a suspension landing in the same season is not two shocks. It is a lost year.

Nobody is doing the accounting, so I will. Five ledgers.

Ledger one, the arithmetic of the event. The 100m hurdles is a discipline where one hundredth of a second changes a medal. Paris is its own evidence. At world level, five or six athletes live between 12.33 and 12.36. When a silver-level hurdler drops off an entry list, the bronze moves up to silver and the fourth-placed athlete enters the medals. Her absence is not merely France's loss. In any meet she would have run, the order of the podium itself changes.

Ledger two, the missing number. The report carries a sanction band and no number behind the band. How many failures? Filing failures, meaning inaccurate or incomplete location information, or missed tests, meaning a tester arrived and could not find the athlete? Spaced how far apart? The rule says three in twelve months. That leaves two questions: whether the count reached three, and whether each instance can be contested individually. Without those three facts, the phrase "up to two years" is a band, not a forecast. A career is being discussed on the basis of a number nobody printed.

Ledger three, the calendar. A provisional suspension from September 18 means competition eligibility is frozen from that date. The effective start date of any final ban and the backdating of the provisional period are the two variables that decide which championships she misses. If 24 months are counted from September 18, two outdoor seasons, an indoor winter and a World Championships cycle fall inside it, and the front edge of Los Angeles Olympic qualification is touched as well. If a tribunal credits the provisional period toward the final sanction, the practical ban shrinks sharply. A backdating clause is the most valuable line in this athlete's career right now.

Ledger four, the money. Results-linked endorsement contracts normally freeze payment during a suspension. The report does not mention this layer, but the structure is familiar on the circuit. For the French federation the arithmetic is simple: one Paris silver medalist in the hurdles single-handedly holds up France's sprint-hurdle medal ceiling. Her absence lowers that ceiling without changing the global balance of power, because the top tier of this event belongs to no single nation.

Ledger five, the coverage ledger, which I have kept by hand. At the 2026 National Athletics Championships I counted the accredited press area myself: 31 journalists, two of them women. The men's 100m final got 600 words and a photo page. The women's final got a 90-word agency brief. Today, when a women's hurdler's name appears in a whereabouts case, headline space does not run short. The shortfall is in the interior story, exactly as before.

The conventional reading comes in two versions, and both are incomplete. One says a suspension means an accusation, and an accusation means guilt. The other, built from the representative's statement, says this is mere paperwork confusion. The first forgets what a provisional measure is. The second knows the language will not need to be used again if the ruling goes badly. Structurally, a provisional suspension is not a verdict; it is a mechanism for freezing eligibility while the process runs. Equally, the "exclusively administrative" framing is not a verdict either. It is a defence strategy.

The blind spot sits here. We argue about the length of a ban, when the heaviest consequence is not legal but temporal. A suspension ledger can be backdated and shortened. A season that loses its rhythm cannot be given back. Pre-season in the gym, the first indoor meet, the outdoor warm-up rounds: a career contains perhaps seven or eight such blocks in total. A tribunal does not credit training blocks, and it does not compensate for a damaged stride rhythm. Even if the case is eventually won, this one year will be banked nowhere but in the notebook.

So what should be watched now? Three numbers and one entry list. How many failures are alleged, the effective start date of any final sanction, how much is backdated, and the entry list. The day she appears on a meet entry list again, the ruling will reveal how much of it is process and how much is punishment. In this event before, a leading women's hurdler went through a whereabouts case, a provisional suspension, and was cleared by a disciplinary tribunal just before a major championship. The possibility is real, and that is the most notable fact available right now.

The press box taught me that absence speaks louder than any chant. My question at the end of all this is simple: the number nobody prints, whose ledger does it live in?
